When it is clear when insurers expect providers to chart and bill with these codes, Unified Practice will make ICD-11 available for use on the platform.

 

  • ICD-11 codes were originally published by the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 25, 2019 and went into effect on January 1, 2022 for recording and reporting causes of illness and death.  It is not yet in effect for healthcare charting, billing and coding in the United States.  There are many steps to be taken before ICD-11 is adopted for use in the healthcare industry in the United States as outlined by the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics. 
  • ICD-11 will contain important updates as there will be new codes to use for Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM) such as "SF57 Liver qi stagnation pattern".  There is much speculation in the profession as to what these codes will mean for insurance billing and reimbursement.  However, it is not yet known when insurers in the United States will be ready to receive claims with these new codes.
