Terminal/Card Reader FAQ

Find answers to common questions about UnifiedPay terminals and card readers, including device options, leasing and purchasing, iPad compatibility, and how to place an order.

Q: What kind of terminal options and card readers does UnifiedPay offer?

A: A card reader is not required to use UnifiedPay. However, many practices find that a card reader makes collecting first-time payments faster and more convenient. Once a payment is processed, the card can be securely saved on file for future payments.

UnifiedPay offers two wireless terminal options, both available for purchase or a 12-month lease. These devices connect via Wi-Fi, are fully integrated with Unified Practice, and support chip, tap, swipe, Apple Pay, and Google Pay transactions.

Q: What is the difference between purchasing and leasing a terminal?

A: UnifiedPay offers the flexibility to either purchase a terminal outright or lease one through a 12-month lease agreement.

If you purchase a terminal, you own the device outright.

If you choose to lease a terminal, the lease term is 12 months and automatically renews unless notice is provided. A minimum of 90 days' notice is required to terminate the lease.

If your UnifiedPay account is canceled, any leased terminal will need to be returned.

Q: Do I need a terminal to use UnifiedPay?

A: No. A terminal or card reader is not required to use UnifiedPay. Card information can be entered manually when taking a payment. Many practices choose to use a terminal or card reader for convenience, especially when collecting first-time payments. All cards taken through the terminal device will be securely saved to the patient's file for future use.

Q: Can I use my existing card reader or terminal from another payment processor?

A: No. Card readers and terminals obtained through other payment processors are not compatible with UnifiedPay.

If you'd like to accept payments using a card reader or terminal, you'll need to use a device that has been certified and configured for UnifiedPay. We offer both wireless terminals and the SREDKey2 magnetic stripe card reader, which can be ordered directly through UnifiedPay.

Q: Do you offer a basic card reader for swiping cards?

A: Yes. UnifiedPay offers the SREDKey2 magnetic stripe card reader. This device connects via USB and allows cards to be swiped directly within Unified Practice.

Unlike the wireless terminals, the SREDKey2 only supports magnetic stripe transactions. It does not support chip, tap, Apple Pay, or Google Pay payments.

The SREDKey2 is compatible with Windows PCs and can also be used with iPads when paired with the appropriate adapter.

Q: How do I order the SREDKey2 card reader?

A: The SREDKey2 is available through the following options:

  • Purchase: $223 (plus applicable sales tax and shipping)
  • Lease: $8.99/month with a 12-month agreement (90 days' notice required for termination)

The cost will be billed to the bank account associated with your UnifiedPay account.

Q: Can I take payments using the Unified Practice iPad app?

A: Yes. UnifiedPay supports payment processing through the Unified Practice iPad app.

You can use either of our wireless terminals or the SREDKey2 magnetic stripe card reader. The SREDKey2 connects via USB, so depending on your iPad model, you may need an appropriate adapter (such as a USB-C or Lightning adapter).

When using a card reader or terminal with the iPad app, you'll have the option to send the payment transaction directly to the device for processing.
